Business Improvement District
The Durango Business Improvement District (also known as the Durango BID) is an organization dedicated to sustaining the “heart” of Durango, its thriving downtown businesses, through a wide range of creative endeavors.
Realizing that special events bring members of the community together and encourage tourists to experience what Durango has to offer, the BID works hard to organize creative projects to sustain what is healthy “Business in the BID.” Seeking new ways to bring folks Downtown, the BID has developed “Rhythms of Durango” – a compilation CD featuring an eclectic mix of Durango’s talented musicians and singer/songwriters as well as a wide variety of events.
Some BID-sponsored events include: HOLiDAZZLE, Spring it On! and Fall for Downtown Durango Days.
In addition to supporting events through marketing grants, “branding” the Historic Downtown has become a central focus of the BID. Efforts have gone far to unify “the look” and elevate awareness of the Downtown – so much so that Durango, primarily because of its Historic Downtown, was named to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Dozen Distinct Destinations for 2007.
Another service to the community is the Visitor Locator Guide, which the BID helps design and produce. It includes a map of the Downtown and North Main, plus a listing of key businesses and destinations of interest to guests of Durango. Free of charge, the guide is distributed during the summer at the BID co-sponsored Visitor Information Kiosk in the 700 block of Main, and, throughout the year, at various hotels and tourist-related businesses.
