Whether walking your pup through Sailing Hawks on a magical frosty morning or running through Horse Gulch in search of sun and warmth, Durango’s cornucopia of trails is alive and well throughout the winter season. But, due to respect for wildlife, not everything is open for play. See below for a list of trail closures lasting till April 15.
Trails 2000: From fat bikes to snowshoes, the Trails 2000 page keeps us up-to-date with trail conditions and restrictions around town and beyond. The following trails are either entirely or partially closed from December 1 till April 15:
- Perins Peak State Wildlife Area
- Upper loop on Animas Mountain
- Big Canyon and Sale Barn trailheads
- Portions of Sidewinder and Cowboy trails
- Grandview BLM trails
- Upper loop on Twin Buttes
- Smelter Mountain is open but only from 10am to 2pm, and dogs are prohibited
Durango Running Company: When the trails get too sloppy or icy, there’s no shame in hitting the road or Animas River Trail. For all of your winter running gear needs and beta on best routes around town, check out the Durango Running Company. Want friends for your frigid outing? Their Winter Pub Run series takes place every Wednesday at 6pm, meeting at various watering holes around town. Check the website for each week's location.
