Perfectly located between Vallecito Lake and Lemon Reservoir at 13906 Florida Road on La Plata County Road 240, this family-operated business is a one-stop shop for beer, wine and liquor at a low price. The story starts with a woman named Helen Burkett, whose parents purchased the property in the 1890’s from a local rancher for $1000 with a $1 down payment. (Those Were The Days) Originating as a lumber mill, with a small liquor/convenience store, originally at the intersection, to serve the construction workers building the Lemon Dam. The property was then bought again in 2016, bringing an end to what was the longest continuing Coors vendor in Colorado. The Hutchins then built what is currently Helen’s Liquor Store in 2017. This 980 square foot country store is built in a unique log cabin style that pays homage to the previous store. Then in 2022 sold to the current owners, this store is once again locally owned and operated and strives everyday, just as Helen did to meet the needs of all the locals.
