Serving the Bayfield, Colorado Community

Upper Pine Fire Protection District provides fire, rescue, mitigation, and emergency medical services to the Bayfield community as well as 265 square miles of La Plata County and Archuleta County. This means that they serve over 15,000 year-round residents and during peak times up to 30,000 people. Most of their services are provided in The Town of Bayfield, Forest Lakes, and the Vallecito Lake Area. Due to the large fluctuations in population, the Upper Pine Fire Protection District works hard to serve their community to the fullest and in hopes of making it better one day at a time. The District also provides the community with the best in Emergency Medical Services as the smallest CAAS accredited ambulance service in the US and the only one that is fire based in Colorado.

Who is Upper Pine River Fire Protection?

The Staff at Upper Pine Fire Protection District want to give their best to the community, this is why every member is a fully certified emergency medical technician or paramedic certified by the State of Colorado. Covering 265 square miles is no easy feat; that's why Upper Pine works together with the U.S. Forest Service and the Fire Districts in the surrounding area.

In 2018, the Upper Pine Fire Protection District responded to 972 calls of which about 75% were medical calls, followed by wildland or structure fires and miscellaneous calls for service and assistance. With each call comes the goal to provide the best service to the community and give back where possible. Many of the calls that they respond to involve assisting the elderly or handicapped with lift assist. To help the Bayfield Community with their everyday lives, Upper Pine budgets for 20 part-time staff members to supplement the 30 full-time staffers.

Wildfire Mitigation Services

The Upper Pine River Fire Protection District is mostly an urban interface fire protection district, meaning people live where wildfires can burn. This means that during the spring and summer months the fire district must conduct wildfire mitigation services throughout the community to help prevent any fires. After mitigation, there is a defensible space around local homes and businesses. Through the help of grant funding, the mitigation process becomes possible and allows to District to help the area’s ranchers and farmers as well.

To better inform the community members Upper Pine Fire Protection works with Firewise of Southwest Colorado, a local non-profit agency. They reach out to homeowners and help educate them on the best ways to protect their homes and properties from wildfires.

First Aid and CPR Classes

The best community is one in which the members can help one another in a time of crisis. To help make this a possibility Upper Pine Fire District offers CPR and first aid classes to anyone in the area for $35 and $30 respectively. These classes teach everything that you need to know to help save lives. If you are interested in taking a class with the District call 970.884.9508 or email CPR@upperpinefpd.org
