Sanctuary for Cats and Dogs

Blackhat Humane Society is dedicated to providing a sanctuary for domestic animals from the Navajo Nation. There are an estimated 250,000+ stray or unrestrained animals roaming the high deserts and mesas of the Four Corners region. Our mission is to spay/neuter, provide initial veterinary care and search for loving homes for these animals who know nothing of the warmth and care of a foster or permanent home.

We are an entirely volunteer run organization with variety of roles from administration and coordination of efforts, to transport of animals and donor asset collection. Our volunteers are at the core of our organization and we are always in need of more hands and minds to help facilitate the operations and make sure the animals receive the care they are in need of.

How You Can Help

Our most pressing needs are for transport and foster volunteers. Foster families give the animals a loving home until they are ready for adoption. Blackhat pays for any veterinary care and supplies — crates, toys, collar and leash, etc. — that your foster animal might need. Transport volunteers, who deliver animals to sister rescues or their forever homes, are reimbursed for gas and, on long trips, meals and lodging. All we ask is your time and a lot of love.

Donations

We rely entirely on donations from the public. Tax-deductible donations may be made via PayPal through our website or by check to Blackhat Humane Society, P.O. Box 3123, Durango, CO 81302. We gladly accept donations of dog food, collars, leashes, crates and toys. We also sell our famous “Dogs of the Navajo” calendar and T-shirts on our website, with all proceeds going to the upkeep of our foster animals. Consider donating here.
