Conserving Open Space
La Plata Open Space Conservancy is bound to the zealous pursuit of preserving our cherished lands for generations to come. LPOSC currently protects more than 20,000 acres of land provided through conservation easements in partnership with private and municipal owners. In addition, we partner with other land trusts and land management organizations to help conserve another 10,000 acres held in their care. In and around Durango, this translates to parks you recreate in, views from scenic roads and trails, healthy river corridors, and having local food in markets and restaurants.
Among the 1,700 land trusts across the United States, LPOSC is one of only 350 that are accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. We are committed to upholding national standards and practices that best serve to protect open space. We are grateful for the landowners who want to generously conserve their property in a permanent way for the benefit of their family, our community, and natural resources for all future generations.
With a dedicated staff, community volunteers and the direction of the board of directors, LPOSC brings decades of experience and know-how to current projects and new volunteer efforts. None of the work we do would be possible without our loyal base of landowners, community members, donations, grants and fundraising events.
