Your favorite winter party is back and ready to leave you completely mystified! Durango’s 43rd Annual Snowdown “cabin fever reliever” celebration is jam packed full of events that you won’t want to miss. Even the Harry Potter gang of friends can’t make it to every event or be two places at once, but don’t worry! We’ve compiled a list of our editor’s choices of events that you simply must participate in, whether you’re just watching or competing! Hold on tight to your broomsticks because it’s going to be a busy four days and you don’t want to miss out on this kind of magic.



All Week

Snowdown Search for the Silver Bullet

Through canyons and meadows across the county, the silver bullet is out there! Only a truly magical sorcerer would be up to the task! Best of luck to all you explorers out there, you might just need all the luck you can get to find this treasure. Entry is FREE and you must be 21+ to participate. 


Wednesday January 26

43rd Annual Snowdown Bartender’s Contest - 4pm @ The Starlight Lounge

Can you conjure up a crafty potion like no other? Something divine, enchanting, a thrill to the senses? An illusion perhaps? The official SNOWDOWN 2022 Cocktail is chosen during this traditional event. Now in its 43rd year since this celebration started! All cocktails will be judged on presentation and taste. You don’t have to be a bartender to enter, but you must be 21+. 

Wizardly Lego Footslog - 4pm @ 11th Street Station

Be a Legend amongst the games! Compete in a timed trial race to prove who has the strongest foot in all the land! All you wizards and magicians will race/walk/crawl across a medley of lego pieces, barefoot for the chance to win prizes! Must be 21+. 


The Mysto REALLY BIG Magic Show - 7:30pm @ Animas City Theatre 

What better way to celebrate a Magical, Mystical Snowdown than by catching a magic show? Mysto the Magi will take you on a vaudeville journey with little play-lets, mystery, secret messages, and group participation in a full 90-minute show with lots of fun, laughter, and illusion. Doors open at 6:30 PM, Show at 7:30 PM. All Ages - from 3 to 93!

Lip Sync Contest - 8pm @ El Rancho Tavern

Give some lip service to this lip sync contest and bewitch the audience with your dazzling performance! Solo or Group Acts, judging based on Best Performance and Crowd Favorite! Dance Party to follow! Must be 21+. 


Thursday January 27

Hogwarts House Potion Contest - 11am - 4pm @ Joel’s Bar

Come on down and show us your best margarita recipe. Bring in the magical ingredients that we wouldn't have and we'll provide the alcohol. This will be a two-part event. Come in between 11 AM to 4 PM and conjure up your cocktail. We will choose four winners, one cocktail per Hogwarts house, to be on the Specials menu for the evening. Whichever recipe sells the best by the end of the night will earn a spot on our upcoming cocktail menu. Must be 21+.


30th Annual La Plata Open Space Conservancy’s Craft Spirit & Wine Tasting - 4:30pm @ Outdoorsy

Hosted by La Plata Open Space Conservancy. Join La Plata Open Space Conservancy for a magical night celebrating 30 years! This SNOWDOWN tradition features a silent auction, delicious food, wine and cocktail tastings, all to support our work to conserve land, water and your Southwest Colorado way of life. Take a look into your Crystal Ball to see what a wonderful difference we can make in this area’s future! Tickets and more details can be found at www.lposc.org. Must be 21+.

The Hive Quidditch Tournament - 5pm @ The Hive

Find the snitch in a game of quidditch at The Hive downtown skate park at 1150 Main. All ages are welcome to participate, but please establish teams of 3 and register prior to the event! Keep all Dementors at bay!

Snow Job Blow Job - 7pm @ The Starlight Lounge 

The 1st person to blow an object across a table using a straw wins. No magic spells. No supernatural powers. Must be 21+

Drag Race and Fashion Show - 8pm @ El Rancho Tavern

Come strut your stuff and dress in your most bewitching Queen or King of the Drag! Join us at the El Rancho Tavern with a Dance Party to follow! Must be 21+.


Friday January 28

Super Sorcerously Sexy Car Wash - 2pm @ 11th Street Station

Your job is to shine and sparkle while you sparkle and shine! Use your magic and put us under a spell with your sexy wizardly or witchy ensemble, getting all soapy and sudsy while washing a classic car for one minute. Must be 21+.

Drink up Relay - 3pm @ Fired Up Pizzeria 

Bring your Team of 4 People to play in Drinking Relay Games and show your skills! Teams will participate in different games challenging their speed, smarts, and sorcery, making their way through a bracket to see who ends up on top! All four players must participate in every game. Space is limited! Teams MUST be signed up by 2 PM the day of the event. Event Entry is FREE but participants pay for beer pitchers. Must be 21+.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Science - 3:30pm @ The Powerhouse Science Center

Dress up as your favorite witch or wizard and take a trip to Hogwarts with your family! Let the “sorting hat” choose which house you belong to, decorate your wand for the light parade and find the science behind magic at this all-ages event. FREE pizza and snacks for all attendees! All ages welcome.

2022 Red Ball Express - 5:30pm @ Alpine Bank, Main Street 

The Rotary Clubs of La Plata County come together for their fun fundraising event of the year! Watch the bewitching red balls roll down 11th Street from 2nd Avenue. Each ball is numbered and the winner is determined by the balls that reach the finish line. If you don’t have a ticket(s) you can’t win! Must be 21+ to purchase tickets.

Beer Pong - 6pm @ The Garage

Teams of two will square off in this double elimination tournament played with traditional beer pong rules. This is a 64-team bracket and teams should sign up early, this event fills up! Must be 21+.

Snowdown Follies - 7pm @ The Durango Arts Center 

Live at the Durango Arts Center Theater! The Follies return for the 38th year of entertainment with your favorite showbiz personalities and local commentary. This notoriously irreverent review is performed by an all volunteer cast and crew. This is adult entertainment with a cash bar. There are COVID entry restrictions for every ticket holder. Must be 18+.


Saturday January 29

Chili Cook Off - 12pm @ The La Plata County Fairgrounds

Calling all alchemists! Time to dust off that cauldron for the annual chili cook off. Bring your hunger and your sense of adventure to enjoy samples of red and green chili, salsas and vegetarian chili. Brew’s and soft drinks will be available to tame those fiery tongues. Doors open at 7 AM to decorate booths/stands/cookers and to start cooking your favorite recipes! Judging begins at 10:30 AM. Tasting cups on sale at 12 NOON with proceeds supporting SNOWDOWN! Witches and warlocks can vote for the people’s choice award. Prizes generously underwritten by Sunny Side Meats Market.

Bloody Mary Contest - 12pm @ The La Plata County Fairgrounds

Those who lay claim to Durango’s best Bloody Mary can show off their goods at this bloody good time! The Bloody Mary Contest takes place during the SNOWDOWN Chili Cook-off. Ice, cups and Vodka will be provided by Ironton Distillery & Crafthouse. Contestants bring the rest to prepare their Bloody Marys and decorate their booth AND themselves, for costumes are always encouraged!

Canine Fashion Show - 1pm @ The McDonald’s Parking Lot

Durango may have been voted the "worst dressed community", but USA Today was not referring to our canines! Bring your best furry friend or borrow someone else's and show em' off in this hysterical fashion show. The categories are funniest, dress alike, and SNOWDOWN theme related. It's a howling good time! Canines of all ages welcome but please keep your leash on.


Sunday January 30

La Plata County Search and Rescue Pancake Breakfast & Silent Auction - 7am @ The La Plata County Fairgrounds

Support the supernatural magical heroes of Search & Rescue! Enjoy an all you can eat breakfast including pancakes, jam, eggs, coffee and juice! Come to our magically delicious breakfast and we’ll come to your rescue! All ages welcome!

Snowdown Follies Videocast - 7pm & 10pm @ Animas City Theatre

If you missed the ticket sales for the Snowdown Follies live event, watch the show on the big screen at the Animas City Theatre! It's almost as good as the real thing - at half the price! 21+
