Lights, Camera, Action: The Winter Photographer's Train

The Winter Photographer’s Train Special

Riding on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is already a magical experience in itself, but imagine being able to capture those magical moments through the lens of a camera! The Winter Photographer’s Special allows all the up-and-coming or established photographers to shoot their shot, literally, of the train! There will be several opportunities for awesome angles, great lighting and unique variations of ways to capture the subject of the famous Durango and Silverton Train! This is a special opportunity for photographers to ride the train while capturing these spectacular types of photos.

WHY THE PHOTOGRAPHER IN YOU SHOULD DO THIS

No matter your skill level, if you enjoy photography this is a perfect opportunity for you to capture images of a subject that is difficult to come by. How many times will you be able to say you jumped off of a train in the middle of a remote wilderness in order to snap a once-in-a-lifetime photograph that will have everyone in your circle of friends coveting your art? The unique lighting conditions in the Night Yard Shoot will test your skills, but also give you the opportunity to capture striking images of a classic era. Pictures say a thousand words and tell a story that you won’t be able to describe in any other way. If you’re not passionate about photography, but your significant other is, this experience makes for a perfect Valentine’s gift as many photographers have something like this on their bucket list. Nothing says “I care about you” more than giving someone an experience of a lifetime within their passion.

WHEN

This event covers the weekend of February 10 - 12, 2023. The Night Yard Shoot is on Friday, February 10th with the Winter Photo Special Train the following morning and Sunday morning. This is the only opportunity to get still images of the train at night with intense lighting and steam surrounding both you and the train! This portion of the photo session starts on Saturday at 6pm and ends at 9pm. Continuing the photography journey, Sunday you will have the opportunity to take live-action shots of the train running through the rigorous terrain between Durango and Cascade. The train will depart at 8am Sunday morning and arrive back in Durango at 4pm. Pastries, non-alcoholic drinks, a mug, and lunch will be included with your ticket price! Note that In order to participate in the Night Yard Shoot, one must purchase a Winter Photo Train ticket. However, if you can’t ride the train and take those spectacular daytime shots, the D&SNGRR will make any remaining spaces available to the general public 24 hours before the night session.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

This is an interactive train ride -- if you want those action-packed, mesmerising photos, you’ll have to be ready to maneuver in the terrain! Hiking boots or sturdy snow boots are suggested. After all, it is Colorado and it is winter -- there is still plenty of snow in the high country even if there isn’t much in town! Wear neutral colors in case you get in the line of another photographer’s shot, and layer up to stay warm as you get on and off the train to take those photos! Lastly, don’t forget your camera … we know iPhones take great photos too, but you won’t want to miss out on getting that perfect shot with something a little bigger that won’t fit in your pocket! D&SNGRR suggests bringing multiple lenses if you have them at your disposal for both wider and longer-length shots!
