Silverton Skijoring: the Most Extreme Sporting Event of the Winter

Image provided by Jeffery Dahl

The town of Silverton, Colorado will be hosting its annual Skijoring event on February 14-16, 2020. As one of the highlights of winter in Southwest Colorado, mark your calendars for a fun weekend unlike any other throughout the year.

Ever want to get on the back of a horse and pull someone on skis behind you with a rope at full speed? Are you not too comfortable with that amount of horsepower? What about on the back of a motorcycle? Don’t stress-- you don’t have to race if this is too eccentric, but you can come watch with us! Skijoring, which is hosted in Silverton, Colorado just an hour north of Durango, is the best winter party of the year in this little mountain town. Who would have ever thought that this would be one of the most popular events in the area? You can watch from the street, or enjoy the party zone at 805 Beer with some beverages! It’s Valentine’s Day weekend so bring your special someone, bundle up, and enjoy watching the crazy rides!

IT'S THE COOLEST EVENT IN SOUTHWEST COLORADO IN FEBRUARY

This is one of the most unique events that takes place in the Durango area! People travel from all over just to participate or simply spectate. Make it a romantic getaway weekend for Valentine’s Day with your honey in the beautiful mountain town of Silverton! Have other plans for your love life? That works too! Bring some friends for a weekend of snow, beer and fun!

Don’t believe us? Here’s a few folks’ testimonials we shared from the event’s Facebook page of how phenomenal Silverton Skijoring is for those who attend or participate:

My wife and I traveled from the High Desert of Southern California to watch Skijoring for the first time. After researching other race venues I chose Silverton because they have it in the town instead of outside of the city. We loved every minute and met some great people. We can’t wait till next year's race!

The event was well organized with great horses, riders and skiers. Topped off by one of the most beautiful settings in Colorado, it was a glorious experience!

SO... WHAT EXACTLY IS SKIJORING?

Skijoring historically means “ski driving”, which is derived from a Norwegian word few people around here can pronounce. Traditionally, people were pulled with a rope behind dogs while on skis. Hence, they were driving on skis. Nowadays in Silverton, daring skiers are pulled with a 33 foot rope behind either a horse for a little more of a south western cowboy flare, or behind a motorcycle for those with a wild side.

HISTORY OF SILVERTON SKIJORING

Silverton’s first time hosting a skijoring event was in 2010 with around a couple hundred people who came out to watch from all over the Four Corners and surrounding areas! Now, ten years later, the Silverton skijoring event expects a crowd of over 2,500 people coming out to watch the event! Huge appreciation shout out to Pete Maisel and Rob Contay, the original founders who brought skijoring to Silverton for all of us to enjoy!

I personally have been involved in skijoring for about twenty-six years. It has been a very successful event for the town of Silverton in the middle of winter. The race is held on Blair Street and there are several old buildings which help make the venue very picturesque.
