The Weekender // August 23rd - 25th
I’ve had it with this place! I don’t know how much longer I can take weather like this: Bayfield - Durango - Ignacio - Silverton - Vallecito Lake. Or such a smorgasbord of things taking place this weekend. Seriously, it’s the weekend before Labor Day and there are 20+ live music shows Thursday through Sunday.
Four Corners Comedy Festival - Thu-Sun August 22-25, 2019
Various locations in Durango
Is laughter the best medicine? Hard to say, but it’s definitely contagious, improves our mood, and reduces the perception of pain. Depending on how you laugh it might be painful too, but I know of not a single person who doesn’t enjoy sore cheeks and abs from laughing hard. So get well and learn how to become a better comedian if that’s your thing. Featuring several live shows and three workshops, this year’s fest kicks off TONIGHT with a reception party at the Strater Hotel and continues with an open mic at The Irish Embassy. Friday features the first of three workshops, “Correctly Offensive,” and continues with two live shows at the Henry Strater Theatre. Saturday’s workshop at 1pm helps the aspiring comedian hone their joke writing skills and continues with more live shows. After Parties on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights are at El Rancho. The final workshop on Sunday gives tips on how to get booked as a comedian and at 7:30pm the Community Concert Hall hosts the Best of the Fest Showcase featuring Jay Whitecotton. Tickets are required for most events and are available on the Henry Strater Theatre’s website with Festival Passes available here. Best of the Fest Showcase can be purchased individually or as part of the All Festival Pass.
San Juan Brewfest - Saturday August 24, 2019
Buckley Park from 1-5pm
The event itself is now legally able to imbibe in its featured ingredient to a good time - craft beer, and lots of it. In case you hadn’t heard, this weekend is the 21st Annual San Juan Brewfest benefitting the United Way. 50 breweries, 100+ beers, limited tickets, no dogs, and no one under 21. Full details here.
There’s actually a marathon this weekend. Or half of one - Saturday August 24, 2019
Race pre-registration required. Meet at Ska by 7am.
The Thirsty 13 Half Marathon, presented by TBK Bank, is back. Running a mostly downhill course with a finish line at Ska Brewing, the race is popular among locals and tourists alike. This half-marathon has traditionally paired itself on the same weekend as the San Juan Brewfest - run in the morning, replenish the carbs in the afternoon. Registration is done through a lottery as the race allows for 700 entrants. At this time the registration is full, so there’s always next year if you were hoping to get in on the fun. Registration traditionally opens on April 1. Have questions about the race or want to volunteer? Contact Race Director Matthew Krichman at firstname.lastname@example.org.
