The Weekender // Aug 30th - Sep 1
Local schools are in session, Fort Lewis College starts classes on Monday, and parents of the first-year students have descended upon Durango along with all of the other 2019 Labor Day Weekend guests to the area. September is just around the corner. With all of this comes the mourning of summer and the celebration of fall weather. If you haven’t noticed already, the late evenings and early mornings are becoming cooler and cooler as each day passes. With drops in temperature comes an explosion of local (and regional!) events in Durango and The Four Corners. Take a peek, and make some plans (like a discounted heli-tour to get the lay of the land!).
Bikes, Beer, and Poker
It’s going down this weekend. By “it”, we mean bike shows, stunt shows, motorcycle giveaways, racing, food, drinks, live music, and more. The Four Corners Motorcycle Rally returns this Labor Day weekend in full strength! Events will be all over the area including Downtown Durango, Sky Ute Casino Resort, Durango Harley-Davidson, and the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Proceeds from events this weekend will be given to Building Homes for Heroes. For a full schedule, click here. And check out this 2018 recap video!
Bluegrass & Camping
2019 Four Corners Folk Festival at Reservoir Hill, Pagosa Springs
Boasting the total Folk Festival package, make sure to block out your calendar this weekend, from August 30th to September 1st, and head on over to Pagosa Springs with your tent, your friends, and your folky-mood. With groups Wild Rivers, The East Pointers, Earls of Leicester and many more playing on both the Main Stage and the Late Night Stage, music will fill the entire area for the entire weekend, and you won't want to miss a single act. Not only will there be blue grass, but special workshops and kids programs along with morning yoga and guided forest walks, all free with your valid wristband. Seven full-service food vendors will be ready to serve you 3 meals a day, as well as beer and wine. Get tickets here.
Films, Mountains, and Festivals, Oh My
Telluride Film Festival
In its 46th year of existence, the 2019 Telluride Film Festival is still proudly giving you the opportunity to participate in “four days of total cinematic immersion,” and not to mention some of the best views of the San Juan Mountain Range. August 20th throught September 2nd, Labor Day Weekend, the town of Telluride will be nearly overflowing with film-makers and film-lovers alike, all giddy about the award-winning feature films. Even though every ticket is sold out (mark your calendars early for next year!) the town of Telluride explodes with culture, art, food, and free events all weekend.
Experience Durango from a Thrilling Perspective
It might be Labor Day Weekend, but it's also Freshman Orientation at Fort Lewis College. Parents and students alike might enjoy the opportunity to really take in the area that the latter are now calling home. Durango is known for its stunning landscape, tucked away as it is in the Southwestern San Juan Mountains. There's really no way to describe it unless you can see it from above, like on one of the many peaks in the area. But if bagging a 14er isn't on the weekend agenda, a discounted Heli Tour is the way to do it. The Back to School Special is only available until September 9th, so whether you're a first-year and want to get to know this area in a thrilling way or you'd like to take that special someone on a breathtaking first date (or second, or third, well you get the idea), then give the folks at Alpine Heli Tours a call.
Wine & Dine, But Better
Live music, local wineries, all aboard the Durango & Silverton Train. Celebrate the weekend right by hopping on board the Wine Train at 10am on Sunday. Local wineries will be on board introducing their drinks and providing samples, while you’ll be serenaded by live music from local favorites, the Still House Junkies. Get your tickets here!
