The Weekender Animas River Days

Summer seems like it’s here with Memorial Day weekend in the rearview, tourists all over the place, and the daily whistles of the train. Ask a local about their skepticism of this remark based upon the snowfall earlier this week. Unofficial guess is that the unbelievable snowpack is behaving like a giant swamp cooler, sucking in moisture then pushing it back out while keeping things a little on the cool side. However, weather forecasts this weekend show temps touching 70 and sunny at Vallecito Lake, mid to upper 70s and the same in Bayfield, and looking to touch 80 under sunny skies in Durango and Ignacio. Don’t rule out the stray shower, but this weather is why we love summer here.

Animas River Days
36th Annual celebration of the Animas River

Best for: Anyone looking to get hooked into the local summer scene in Durango

With warm weather on hand this weekend bringing out the summer fashions and a rising CFS, the organizers and participants in this year’s Animas River Days festival are cheering this development. Look for carnage in Durango’s Whitewater Park during the famous (and of course, costumed) River Parade Viewing Party at 6pm this Saturday at Santa Rita Park. A DJ and the Ska Brewing Beer Garden will be present, making this the classic Durango shindig (music, beer, and costumes). Other events and competitions drawing paddlers from all over the Four Corners include river surfing, stand-up paddling, freestyle kayaking, and more. Here’s an in-depth look back on some Animas River Days past, including the festival’s history.

2nd Annual Kid Gear Swap ‘n Sell
Cafe Au Play riffs on the common outdoor gear swaps in Durango

Best for: Mamas and Papas who wish to switch out kid inventory

Changes of season in Durango usually mean gear swaps and sales - think bikes in the spring and skis in the fall. Now that you’re familiar with the concept, apply it to all the gear required to raise kiddos these days. When my brothers first had their children, I swear it was like the invasion of Normandy every time they’d come over for supper. Then the kids grew and inventory had to be replaced. Fortunately for all the local parents out there Cafe au Play is hosting its 2nd annual swap 'n sell featuring baby and kid gear and clothing for sale, swap, and free. Bring any items you wish to swap or sell (organized by size/age of course) and send an email to durangocafeauplay@gmail.com to coordinate the drop-off of items you merely wish to donate.
