The traditional toll of the bell in Durango which marks the slide from September into October is the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering (oh, and the peak of fall colors too). Welcome to October, Durango! Spooky season is officially here. Gear up for scary movies, bonfires, mulled wine, and the return of your favorite Patagonia vest. No matter the season, there are always a variety of things to do in Durango and the surrounding area. Check out these local events happening this weekend.

Celebrate Cowboy Heritage
Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering
An exciting, fun-filled festival featuring poets and musicians from all over the country, the 31st annual Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the American Cowboy. Featured events throughout the weekend include cowboy poet trail rides, comedic performances at the Henry Strater Theatre, Chuckwagon breakfasts, a night of dancing at the Wild Horse Saloon, a street parade on Saturday morning in downtown Durango, and live music performances are ways one can participate. The headquarters for the Gathering is located in the Oak Room inside the Strater Hotel. Saddle up and head out for a unique Durango tradition!

A Day of Apples
11th Annual Apple Days Festival
The Good Food Collective and Fenceline Cider are teaming up for the 11th Annual Apple Days Festival. On Saturday, you can spend the day harvesting yummy, local apples to prepare for the festival. On Sunday at Buckley Park from 11am-4pm, enjoy live music, pie eating contests, and the opportunity to press your own apple juice! Bonus: the whole event is free!

Meet Charlie Brown
Each year, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad system offers the Pumpkin Patch Express Train on Saturdays & Sundays only to give the family a chance to meet Peanut characters like Snoopy and Charlie Brown and pick out your own pumpkin at the patch. The day includes a treat bag, musical entertainment, halloween costume contest, and much more! Get your tickets soon!

Run for Breast Cancer
In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Mercy Health Foundation is hosting this annual run that raises funds for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. With both a run and a walking option, this race is a great way for everyone to get involved, get active, and give back! The fundraiser will take place at Three Springs.
