New Airport Terminal Open House Oct. 14

Durango La Plata County Airport Hosting a Terminal Area Plan study

The Durango-La Plata County Airport (DRO) is currently undertaking a Terminal Area Plan study to evaluate development opportunities of the existing terminal site, including a recently acquired 12.5-acre parcel of land located immediately adjacent to the existing terminal complex. The next step in the Terminal Area Plan study is the presentation of initial conceptual design alternatives. A public open house will be held on Monday, October 14, 2019 at Durango City Hall, located at 949 E 2nd Ave, Durango, CO 81301, from 5-7 pm.

Acquiring the parcel of land north of the existing terminal has presented the airport with a strategic opportunity to re-assess development alternatives that leverage existing infrastructure, offer long-term unconstrained growth over an expanded footprint, and align with an incremental development strategy. The findings of this Terminal Area Plan study will allow the airport to evaluate the existing terminal facilities for long-term consideration of renovation, expansion, or new construction.

The demand for commercial air service at DRO continues to grow. 2019 is on track to be the airport's busiest year of all time, with new routes added bringing the total passengers expected to arrive or depart to over 385,000 this year. The airport’s mission is to continue facilitating this air service in a safe, efficient, and sustainable manner. The current terminal facility was built over 30 years ago, and is undersized and aging. Expansion and modernization of terminal facilities is a key part of the airport’s plan to accommodate today’s needs as well as future growth in demand for air service to and from the region.

Throughout this process, the Airport seeks to ensure that the community remains informed and has every opportunity to provide comment on any proposed development at DRO.
