7 Winter Activities to do in Durango

Let it snow! We are about to start yet another official winter season in Durango, Colorado and if there is one thing we Durangatangs know, it’s how to have a blast in the cold. If you are running out of winter activities to do and you’re completely stumped on finding something to do during these cold months, then this one's for you. Whether you are an avid skier and you want to try your luck snowboarding this year, or this is finally your year to bite the bullet and buy some snowshoes, we’ve got you covered from where to go to where to buy your gear! As always, be sure to give us a follow on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag, #dodurango, to be featured on our page! We would love to see what playing in the snow looks like to YOU.

This one may be an obvious one for most, but we have to include it because who wouldn’t want to spend their weekends in Durango skiing/riding up at Purgatory Mountain Resort? With optimal skiing for anyone on any level from expert to beginner, Purgatory is the perfect mountain for anyone trying to enjoy the snow. Be sure to stop by the Powderhouse for a brew after you hit a few runs– it’s the best way to spend some time with family and friends in the great outdoors. If you didn’t buy a season pass, we would recommend getting a punch pass so you can get the most out of every turn you take on the mountain. If you are looking to explore more ski resorts in the area such as Hesperus, Wolf Creek or Telluride, then be sure to check out the, “2022/2023 Ski Season Updates.” Further,  if you’re a full adrenaline junkie, be sure to check out the, “Tips for Backcountry Skiing this Winter in Durango.”

If you are looking for something a bit more relaxing vs. seeking adrenaline downhill skiing at Purgatory, then you should try cross country skiing! The Durango Nordic Center, located at the base of Engineer Mountain, is a great option for you to trek across over 23km of stunning terrain. You can purchase a season trail pass OR a day trail pass. If you are looking to invest your time this winter into cross country skiing, then we would also recommend heading up to Vallecito Lake! Vallecito Nordic Ski Club does their best work at grooming terrain around the lake. With stunning views like these, why wouldn’t you want to become a member? Get your membership HERE.

Snowmobiling is a must try for those who have yet to experience it. However, going out and purchasing your own snowmobile can be a bit pricey, so if you aren’t fully invested in the idea, then we would recommend either renting or going on a tour. Purgatory Resort offers snowmobiling tours for the entire family! With options for riding with someone or flying solo on your own machine, snowmobiling allows you to be in control on the mountain. Not to mention, snowmobiling offers a way to explore new terrain and completely untouched, powdery snow. Be sure to check out Snowmobile Adventures and book your tour today!

If you are looking for a winter activity that is a little more relaxing, then this one's for you. Bears Ranch in Durango offers sleigh rides with gorgeous views of Engineer Mountain, the Needles Mountains, Hermosa Cliffs and Haviland Lake. Make a romantic date out of it with your significant other or bring out the whole family for an unforgettable experience.
