Durango Area Events Calendar

Make, decorate and fly your own paper airplane the farthest. See how far you can throw your plane within our course boundaries. All materials will be supplied by OFFICE DEPOT. (Note: No outside materials such as premade or folded paper planes, tape, paper clips, weights, glue, attachments, plane launchers, etc are NOT permitted.) Each contestant will make/decorate/ throw their own plane. There will be two age groups (Group-A: grades 1-6 & Group-B: grades 7-12) and both age groups will compete at the same time. 1st place prizes per group will be awarded in each age group plus prizes for contestants. An Adult must accompany all contestants and a parent signed permission form is required for all participants. Grades 1-12.

- returning for the 40th year of entertainment with your favorite bards,
showbiz personalities and local commentary. This notoriously irreverent
event has a cash bar and performs both weekends of SNOWDOWN to
allow as many people as possible to experience the fun and laughter the SNOWDOWN Follies provides! Ticket purchases limited to four per
person. The show is performed by an all-volunteer cast and crew. Secret
box office is Saturday, Jan 14 at 6 AM. Radio stations KIQX, KRSJ and
KIUP will announce over the air the clues to the secret locations where
SNOWDOWN Follies enthusiasts can line up to obtain coupons for the
purchase of SNOWDOWN Follies tickets at the Elk's Lodge, (9th St
entrance). Also, there is a ticket marketplace at the Bank of the San Juans, 144 E 8th. The highest bidder will be able to purchase 12 tickets (sold in
lots of 4). Bidding begins Tuesday, Jan 17 and continues for 4 days. If not
sold out, bidding will extend to Jan 30. Bids will be received in person only
at 144 E 8th St. No telephone calls.This is adult entertainment.

November- January 2022: The “Pastiche” Exhibit is the work of seven local artists (Cindy Coleman, Jenny Treanor, Amanda Preston Araujo, Amy Vaclav, Bethany Bachmann, Linda Geer, and Janet Kenna) who interpreted 8 works of art ranging from Matisse and Van Gogh to more contemporary artists in a variety of media including pastel, painting, quilting, fiber collage, wool and silk arts, stained glass, glass mosaic, beads, thread and mixed media. The exhibit will run through January 7, upstairs from the Smiley Cafe in the Smiley Building gallery, 1309 E. Third Ave, Durango.

Departing from the Durango Depot, this excursion takes you up into the Rocky Mountains with incredible views of the San Juan National Forest as you travel alongside the beautiful Animas River while relaxing in heated coaches. Cascade Canyon is a destination like no other and is the perfect setting for a fire-side lunch, photo opportunities or a walk along the Animas River during your 60-minute layover. Spanning 26 miles each way, this 5.25 hour round trip experience is offered on select dates from November 19 through May 5.

Progressive genre introductions of drawing in pencil, pen and ink, watercolor and acrylic paints and ceramic clay. Different skill-building lessons each workshop. Leave your mental stress and anxiety behind and get lost in various arts! $200 fee for all 6 classes!

Hosted by Purgatory Resort. Start your SNOWDOWN celebration with a pre-party opening ceremony! There will be a Ski Parade down the "Hill" to pass the SNOWDOWN torch from 2022 to now. Come ski in costume and you can join the parade! Meet at the 6 pack lift at 1 PM for the ride up and ski down to follow the torch. The torch will light the opening flame and the 2024 THEME WINNER will be announced! All ages welcome!
