Operations Director
The San Juan Mountains Association (SJMA) is seeking an Operations Director who is eager to make a difference by helping to protect the public lands in Southwest Colorado.
The Operations Director, under the immediate supervision of the Executive Director, is responsible for managing payroll and personnel records of all SJMA employees. The
Operations Director oversees the general business administration, including bookkeeping, banking, grant management, and invoicing. The Operations Director will complete monthly and year-end reports for the Executive Director and the Board of
Directors. With the assistance of the Executive Director, this person is responsible for annual budget preparation and accounting for programs, projects, and services.

SJMA empowers visitors and locals to explore, learn about, and protect the spectacular public lands of southwest Colorado. Founded in 1988, SJMA is a nonprofit cooperating
(or interpretive) association for several federal land management agencies, including the
San Juan National Forest, as well as the Rio Grande and Uncompahgre National Forests, the BLM Gunnison and Uncompahgre Field Offices and the BLM Canyons of the Ancients
National Monument. SJMA manages or oversees a dozen retail outlets in public land offices throughout Southwest Colorado.

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Operations Director, under the supervision of the Executive
Director, will oversee the general business administration, including bookkeeping, banking, grant management, and invoicing.

LOCATION: The position is based out of SJMA’s headquarters within the San Juan
National Forest Headquarters in Durango, Colorado.

HOURS: The position is classified as exempt “Regular Full-Time.” Hours scheduled will be forty (40) hours per week with occasional nights and weekends.

COVID Policy: Employees must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If selected, the applicant must submit proof of vaccination. Employees are expected to comply with SJMA's employee handbook and Forest Service mask wearing and social distancing protocols.


Maintain in-house bookkeeping records
Oversee banking activities, including deposits
Process and manage all staff expense reports
Oversee monthly sales tax reporting and collections for SJMA’s bookstores, including sales tax payments
Complete monthly and year-end financial reports, including inventory reports
Lead the employee onboarding process and manage personnel policies
Manage payroll
Work with leadership team on individual program and project budgets
Work with the executive director to establish and oversee annual budgets
Manage grant requirements and reporting, including billing and reports
Prepare the required financial plans and forms for all agency supported projects/programs
Oversee general office administration of the organization, including but not limited to, the purchase of office supplies, postage and common office provisions
Maintain all corporate records, including legal and business documents, including records of Director meetings
Secure and maintain all necessary insurance policies, including but not limited to, general liability, workers’ compensation, health and property insurance
Report and manage all necessary employer tax requirements, including but not limited to, quarterly report forms, federal and state employer tax reports and quarterly sales tax forms
Complete all proper business licensing applications and forms for each product sales outlet


Experience with non-profit bookkeeping
Experience with personnel management
Experience with grant and agreement management
Bookkeeping skills and knowledge of QuickBooks Online software system
Excellent communication/public relations skills
Self-directed, detail-oriented and well-organized
Awareness of public lands and regional issues
Ability to work with a Board of Directors and present financial updates at the monthly meetings
Ability to work effectively with Forest Service, BLM and other government agency officials, representatives of business vendors, contractors and the public
Proficiency with Google apps, Microsoft Word, Excel and the internet

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Human Resources, Accounting, Operations or related degree.

A valid Colorado Driver’s License is required, as well as a good driving record. A personal vehicle will be used on occasion and mileage reimbursed at a rate pursuant to internal policy.


Salary is expected to start around $55,000 - $60,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits include paid PTO, health insurance reimbursement program and the possibility for annual retirement match.
